Nov 19th, 2023 Film Festival Returns at Totnes Cinema

We’re thrilled to announce that the 6th Transition Town Totnes Film Festival will take place at the much-loved venue, Totnes Cinema, on November 19th. The event aims to bring people together through the shared love of film and storytelling, to explore ways in which we can live more sustainably in these times of change.

In the morning the café will be open as usual from 10am for the general public and there will be an opportunity to join filmmakers Emilio Mula and Edson Acero for a workshop in animation. Details about how to register for this workshop will soon be available on our website.

The afternoon will be a ticketed event from 2pm for the screening of two documentary films by Cornwall Climate Care, Food for Thought and Under the Surface, both of which will be introduced by the filmmaker Claire Wallerstein.

A very special evening will commence from 7pm with a guest speaker introducing the film King Cole. An announcement will be made soon on our website and social media channels, with more details including how to book tickets. Tickets will also be available from the bar.

TTTFF20 dates

TTTFF20: our next festival will be in November 2020, dates tbc – again in partnership with the Barn Cinema in Dartington and our own local venue, Totnes Cinema.

Transition Town Totnes Film Festivals show films on a range of important issues – including climate change, food production, declining resources and the value of community. We also address key challenges of our time such as refugees, global exploitation, social exclusion/justice, and women’s empowerment.

We seek to present films which provide hope, inspiration and imaginative solutions whilst not avoiding the stark realities we are currently facing.

Unlike most film festivals we do not just show recent releases but rather present stimulating films which have not been commercially distributed.

Many sessions offer time for discussions, often with the film-makers themselves and relevant speakers. There are also film-making workshops over the weekend for both children and adults.

Transition Town Totnes (TTT)

Transition Town Totnes is a community-led local charity that exists to strengthen the local economy, reduce our environmental impact, and build our resilience for a future with less cheap energy and a changing climate.

TTT is not a ‘membership’ organisation, but a collection of local volunteers with a small staff team, who come together to work on projects. Anyone can get involved. Our projects and groups are ever-changing and evolving, and we always welcome new ideas.

Our work ranges from increasing the amount of low impact affordable housing, sharing skills, creating livelihoods, reducing energy costs and carbon emissions, growing our local food economy, running a film festival and working in partnership with other local projects.

Transition Town initiatives began in 2005 and Totnes was one of the first towns to declare itself to be in transition – so what does that mean?
The initial impetus for Transition was Peak Oil.  Without cheap fossil fuels, many of the things we take for granted become impossible, and our dependency makes us vulnerable. Bring Climate Change into the equation, and reducing our dependency on fossil fuels becomes logical, urgent and ethically imperative. Many of the projects and proposals that have come from TTT explore ways of living that respect the biological limits of the planet.

Economic growth, as measured by governments and mainstream economists, is utterly dependent on energy use.
Transition proposes new ways to regenerate the economy by making things much more local again and cutting down on fossil fuel dependence. This is hugely economically advantageous to our communities, with significant potential for more local skills and employment.

In practice, Transition works by inviting people to take ownership of the process; not by claiming to have all the answers but through encouraging creativity, and by building networks with other organisations. An essential part of the Transition method is visioning.
We believe in a positive vision of the future and work to make it real.

A part of Transition Network

Transition Network

TRANSITION is a movement of communities coming together to reimagine and rebuild our world by starting local.

Started in 2005 it has now spread to over 50 countries, with thousands of groups in towns, villages, cities, universities, schools.

Courageous conversations are being had; extraordinary change is unfolding.

Transition groups and organisations form at various levels of scale to catalyse and support Transition.

The TRANSITION NETWORK functions at a global level, whilst at the local level there are the core teams of local initiatives such as TTT (Transition Town Totnes), and in between local and global are the National and Regional Hubs.

These Hubs are as diverse as the communities they arise in. Some are funded, many are volunteers, others are pre-existing organisations who stepped up to catalyse and support Transition in their part of the world.

People get involved with Transition for all sorts of reasons:

• To get to know their neighbours

• To feel that they are making a difference in the world, both now, and for future generations

• To overcome the sense of disconnection they feel from self, others and from the nature around them because the world’s huge challenges feel more manageable if addressed at the local scale

• To catalyse all manner of new projects, enterprises and investment opportunities

• To learn new skills

• To feel like they are creating a more life enhancing story for their place

• To feel connected to other people, the natural world, and to something historic and exciting happening around them

• Because they feel it is “the right thing to do”

• Because they feel disenfranchised by politics and want to be able to take back a sense that they can influence the world around them

One of the key ways Transition spreads is through telling inspiring stories.
