Transition Town Totnes (TTT)

Transition Town Totnes is a community-led local charity that exists to strengthen the local economy, reduce our environmental impact, and build our resilience for a future with less cheap energy and a changing climate.

TTT is not a ‘membership’ organisation, but a collection of local volunteers with a small staff team, who come together to work on projects. Anyone can get involved. Our projects and groups are ever-changing and evolving, and we always welcome new ideas.

Our work ranges from increasing the amount of low impact affordable housing, sharing skills, creating livelihoods, reducing energy costs and carbon emissions, growing our local food economy, running a film festival and working in partnership with other local projects.

Transition Town initiatives began in 2005 and Totnes was one of the first towns to declare itself to be in transition – so what does that mean?
The initial impetus for Transition was Peak Oil.  Without cheap fossil fuels, many of the things we take for granted become impossible, and our dependency makes us vulnerable. Bring Climate Change into the equation, and reducing our dependency on fossil fuels becomes logical, urgent and ethically imperative. Many of the projects and proposals that have come from TTT explore ways of living that respect the biological limits of the planet.

Economic growth, as measured by governments and mainstream economists, is utterly dependent on energy use.
Transition proposes new ways to regenerate the economy by making things much more local again and cutting down on fossil fuel dependence. This is hugely economically advantageous to our communities, with significant potential for more local skills and employment.

In practice, Transition works by inviting people to take ownership of the process; not by claiming to have all the answers but through encouraging creativity, and by building networks with other organisations. An essential part of the Transition method is visioning.
We believe in a positive vision of the future and work to make it real.

CLEAR WATER arts trail poster

Totnes hosts the CLEAR WATER ART TRAIL – 29th October to the 19th November.

Be prepared for the unusual when Totnes welcomes the “CLEAR WATER” Art Trail, which includes works made with local artists, schools, the library, and other groups in and around Totnes.

Works will be displayed in numerous shop windows along Fore Street and The High Street as well as Morrison’s and the ReSTORE at Dartington.

CLEAR WATER aims to draw attention in a playful and creative way to the importance of keeping our water crystal clear and clean:  ACTTT  has created this Trail to support the Transition Town Film Festival.

An exhibition will follow in January 2019 at the Ariel Centre, Totnes
